"In Memoriam"

Mother Beck

Mrs. Barbara Eunice Beck was born in Burnt Corn, Alabama, on November 1st 1935. While she was a young elementary student attending Spencer Bibbs Elementary School, it was discovered that Babara had been gifted with the singing voice of an angel. She received her high school education at Booker T. Washington High School, Pensacola, Florida and began her college education as a voice major at Howard University, Washington, D.C. Later, she entered Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Florida, on an academic scholarship and later graduated cum laude.

While attending Bethune, she was soloist with the B.C.C. renowned Concert Chorale which toured throughout the United States. She was also president of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society and was listed in Who's Who Among Students in College and Universities.

Following her college graduation Mrs. Beck taught French at Washington High School and later served as the director of choruses and was voice teacher at Tate High School for sixteen years. As a Tate High School educator, Mrs. Beck was loved and revered by all of her students; for in her role as chorus director and voice teacher, she became each student's mentor, friend, and mother. All Tate students who had Barbara as a teacher still refer to her affectionately as "Mom." Her co-workers too recognized her as a dedicated and very competent teacher. This dedication and compassion are equally" evident in her relationship with others.

Barbara utilized her talents to conduct concerts locally and in Washington, D.C. Also, Barbara was soloist on her college album in 1964 and was soloist in the production of Shubert's Mass in "G" performed by B.C.C. Chorale and the Daytona Symphony Orchestra. And with the B.C.C. Chorale sang at Carnigie Hall and appeared on national T.V. Mrs. Beck has been featured as guest soloist on a number of programs for local, professional, social, civic, and religious groups. Including a mini-recital for the Pensacola Symphony Guild.

Mrs. Beck was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Iota Omega Chapter. One of her proudest moments was when she was presented on April 26, 1986 in concert by her chapter.

She also held membership in the Florida Vocal Association, the Florida Music Educators Association, and the Music Educators National Conference. She is listed in the 1972 edition of Leaders of American Secondary Education and has been named Big Sister of the Year in Pensacola

After her retirement she taught voice, held many non-profit corporate board directorships including Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Pensacola, and The Action Center of New York and successfully created and operated Bizzi Bows by Barbara Inc. In addition to her professional and social involvements, Mrs. Beck was also very active in her former church, Allen Chapel, A.M.E., where she directed the Mass Choir. For nearly twenty five years she was a member of the Pensacola First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir.

After a valiant 14 year battle, on Friday January 15th, 2010 in New York City, Barbara Beck was called to her heavenly home. She died surrounded by loving family and friends.
